The Virunga Massif a geological word used when describing the area of the earth’s crust that is separated by faults. This region (the Virunga Massif) is a region comprising of a series of 8 Volcanoes that stretch through three countries that include Uganda, Rwanda and DRC, and this region is a haven to three National Parks that include Mgahinga National Park of Uganda, Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda and Virunga National Park of DRC. The Virunga massif/Region spans an area of 8000 square kilometers (800,000 hectares/3089 square miles) and gets its name from “Ibirunga”- a Kinyarwanda word meaning Volcanoes. The 8 fascinating Volcanoes that make up the Virunga massif/region include Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Nyiragongo, Mount Nyamuragira, Mount Sabinyo, Gahinga and amount Mikeno.
