The private lodges, bungalows and camps within Virunga National Park provide visitors an inclusive gorilla trekking experience including luxury accommodations with en suit facilities and meals.
Mikeno Lodge bungalows manage to combine bungalow private facilities and rendering of full hotel living services. There’s a restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with views of overlooking the forest valley and active Mt. Nyiragogo volcano.
Rooms are spacious and each bungalow come with a fireplace and personal caretaker will serve the food and drinks.
The staff gives access to the Mikeno forested volcano and the local communities where you’ll meet locals as well as spot monkeys, birds and occasionally chimpanzees. Not within walking distance from Goma city, it takes 90 minute drive to the lodge.
Bukima Tented Camp
For visitors who want fast access to starting point for gorilla tracking in Virunga national park, it does not get closer than staying at Bukima Tented camp. Sometimes during rainy season, by chance gorillas might pass by.
There are 6 plush tents built on raise platforms to provide separate facilities including private bathrooms with running water. Four tents have double beds while two are fitted though spacious and clean. All have gorgeous views of Mt. Mikeno, and a red glow is seen at night above Mt. Nyiragongo.
Mount Nyiragongo Summit Shelters
It’s hard to believe that the 12 summit shelters are nestled up the mountain with direct access to the active lave lake and great winding views of Virunga massifs. The steepness is difficult to walk around though each summit shelter has 2 beds where to put sleeping bags.
Best suited for visitors to Virunga who want to spend an overnight and experience the active boiling lava lake on Mt. Nyriagongo volcano. However, it’s possible to hike and return down to Goma which is 30 minute drive.
